Ray Bunker, a 2012 Fenton graduate, represented the United States by wrestling at the Sept. 15 World Championships in Kazakhstan.

“Ray competed well and did a tremendous job representing Fenton at the World Championships in Kazakhstan,” said Brian Hastings, a social studies teacher and wresting coach. “Ray defeated an opponent from India to make it to the quarterfinals and led the No. 1 seeded wrestler from Bulgaria for most of the match before ultimately losing. He finished the tournament ranked 12th in the world.”

Bunker advanced to the World Championships after a June 2 victory at the Final X tournament in Lincoln, NE. and after having won the U.S. Open a few months earlier in Las Vegas, NV.

Fenton is where Bunker got his start as a freshman. By his senior year, Bunker placed third in state at the IHSA tournament. Now, Bunker proudly wrestles for the U.S. Marine Corps, where he is a sergeant.

“Representing the United States on a World or Olympic team is the pinnacle of wrestling and it is an absolutely phenomenal accomplishment,” Coach Hastings said. “Ray Bunker has constantly improved through hard work, having extreme confidence in his ability, and being in perfect training situations.”

Coach Hastings said Bunker is very supportive of the Fenton wrestling program and routinely visits with Bison wrestlers to teach techniques and give advice.

Congratulations, Ray Bunker! Fenton High School is proud of you and grateful for all that you do.
